Ukraine lost 10 million people due to war - Institute of Demography

Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Ella Libanova estimated Ukraine's total demographic losses at approximately 10 million people. She said this in an interview published by RBC-Ukraine.

This figure includes:

  • additional mortality, caused by the war;

  • unborn children due to a sharp drop in the birth rate;

  • large-scale migration Ukrainians abroad.

Migration and return

According to Libanova, at present about 5 million Ukrainians are outside the country. Among them. 70% women have a university degree.

The forecast for the return is disappointing: the following will return to Ukraine only about 30% those who have left.
Key drivers of return:

  • security,

  • availability of housing,

  • work,

  • prospects for children.

Falling birth rate

Before the start of the full-scale war, the total fertility rate was 2.1 children per woman. Today, it has fallen to 0,7 - the lowest figure in the history of Ukraine's independence.

According to Libanova, after the end of the war, a partial restoration is possible - up to 1.6 children per woman, However, this is still not enough to replace the population.

Context.

Demographic losses could be one of the biggest long-term consequences of the war: the impact on the labour market, economic growth, the pension system and the country's defence capability will be felt for decades.
