A shark attacked a Russian tourist in the Maldives: the victim needed a skin transplant
A nurse shark attacked a Russian tourist during a popular snorkelling excursion in the Maldives. As reported by SHOT, a family from St Petersburg went on a tour where participants swim alongside non-aggressive shark species.
While bathing, a woman carried by the current to the area where instructors throw fish to predators. The tourist didn't have time to react, and the shark mistook her movement for prey, stared at her.
Medical care
The organisers quickly stopped the bleeding and took the victim to the nearest medical centre. Later, the woman was transferred to a hospital, where surgeons several hours of skin grafting surgery.
The family turned to the insurance company to reimburse them for the treatment costs.
Not the first time
There have been similar incidents in the Maldives before. In early November, a shark injured A 15-year-old girl, who also took part in snorkelling.
Experts remind us that even non-aggressive shark species can be dangerous if a person enters the feeding area or violates safety rules.
