Russian Foreign Ministry statement on US strikes on Venezuela

The US has committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela, - Russian Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said that the United States« strikes on Venezuelan territory are an »act of armed aggression" that allegedly grossly violates the country's sovereignty and international law.

Position of the Russian Foreign Ministry

The Russian Foreign Ministry's statement emphasises «deep concern» over US actions and strongly condemns the military operation against the regime Nicolas Maduro. The Russian side has traditionally accused Washington of destabilising the situation in the region and interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign state.

Threats from the State Duma

In parallel with diplomatic statements, the State Duma of the Russian Federation made public threats of direct military and technical support to Caracas. In particular, the deputy Alexey Zhuravlev said that Russia could provide Venezuela with Oreshnik weapons so that it could «respond to America's attacks».

These statements were made against the backdrop of reports of detentions Nicolas Maduro as part of the US operation and the declaration of a state of emergency in Venezuela.

Context.

Moscow is increasingly using Venezuela as an element of its global confrontation with the United States, rhetorically trying to position itself as a «defender of sovereignty» despite its own full-scale war against Ukraine.
