Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has stated that Ankara is prepared to facilitate the resumption of talks between Ukraine and Russia to bring the war to an end. Erdogan has offered to help with the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia
During a telephone conversation with Donald Trump The Turkish President has confirmed his country’s readiness to join international efforts to restore diplomatic dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow.
Erdogan stressed that Turkey supports initiatives aimed at ending the war through negotiations.
According to a statement from the Turkish President’s Office, Ankara is prepared to facilitate the resumption of the diplomatic process between Ukraine and Russia and the end of the war as part of that process.
However, the statement does not specify whether the presidents discussed specific dates, the format or the venue of the forthcoming talks.
Trump and Erdoğan discussed the situation in the Middle East
A separate topic of conversation was the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and Yemen.
Erdogan stated that Turkey, together with its partners in the Mecca Defence Alliance, is closely monitoring developments in the region. According to him, Ankara is working towards a diplomatic resolution to issues relating to maritime security and regional tensions.
The presidents also discussed the development of relations between Turkey and the US. Erdoğan stated his intention to expand cooperation in all areas in the run-up to the centenary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which will be marked in 2027.
Trump congratulated Turkey on Republic Day
During the conversation, the US President congratulated Mr Erdoğan and the Turkish people on Republic Day, which is celebrated every year on 29 October. Mr Trump also wished the forthcoming summit of the Organisation of Turkic States every success.
The official statement from the Turkish side contains no information regarding the reaching of new agreements on ending the war in Ukraine.
