The war in Ukraine fades into the background in Davos due to Trump's statements on Greenland
The issue of the war in Ukraine has suddenly lost its central place in the discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos due to the aggressive intentions of the US president Donald Trump regarding Greenland. This was reported by the Financial Times.
According to the newspaper, a few days ago, European leaders planned to use the forum to persuade Trump to provide security guarantees for post-war Ukraine. However, the agenda is now being rewritten.
Change of focus
The meeting of national security advisers, which was supposed to be devoted to the Ukrainian issue, will focus today on The situation around Greenland. European capitals are increasingly concerned about the possible consequences of Washington's tough stance on the Arctic region.
Contacts between the USA and Russia
Despite the change in focus, Reuters reports that a representative of the Russian Kirill Dmitriev will visit Davos for the first time since 2022 to meet with members of the US delegation. At the same time, the range of issues that may be discussed with US representatives has not been officially specified.
Context.
FT analysts note that the shift in attention from Ukraine to Greenland is indicative of broader geopolitical changes and rising tensions between the US and Europe. For Kyiv, this means the risk of a temporary decrease in political attention to the war at a time when the parameters of post-war security are being discussed.
56th Annual Meeting of Business and Politics in Davos starts today, 19 January, and will last until 23 January.
