Moscow declares readiness to share electricity production from ZNPP with Ukraine
Russia has declared its readiness to share electricity production from Zaporizhzhya NPP with Ukraine. This is reported by the Politico citing a US official familiar with the trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US and Russia in Abu Dhabi.
Focus on the economy and WPP
According to the publication's sources, Much of this week's talks were devoted to economic issues, in particular the topic of control over the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and the use of its capacities.
The discussion was of the following nature de-escalation, The EU is not a party to a final political settlement.
The stumbling block - security guarantees
One of the key and most difficult issues in the negotiations remains Western security guarantees for Ukraine. According to Politico, this was the point of greatest disagreement between the parties.
Europe's position
European countries insist on the presence of a limited military contingent in Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire. The initiative to deploy such forces was led by France and Germany.
The role of the United States
US security guarantees, according to sources, may include:
satellite and intelligence support;
limited use of drones to monitor the contact line;
logistics support without a direct military presence on the ground.
Post-war perspectives
According to Politico's American interlocutors, after a possible peace is reached:
Ukraine may receive a «prosperity plan» with large-scale economic support;
Russia - an opportunity to conclude business deals with the United States, This is seen as an element of incentive to fulfil the agreements.
Context.
Zaporizhzhia NPP remains the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and one of the most sensitive issues of the war. Ukraine has repeatedly emphasised that ZNPP is owned by Ukraine, and any proposals for its use are possible only after the full de-occupation and restoration of Kyiv's control.
There are no official comments from the Ukrainian authorities on the idea of «joint production» of electricity at ZNPP not disclosed.
