Why Ukraine needs it
-
Patriot systems are one of the key elements of Ukraine's air defence.
-
Modernisation of launchers improves the reliability and efficiency of the systems in combat conditions, which is especially important before the winter period.
-
The accelerated transfer will allow Ukraine to quickly integrate the new platforms into its defence against missile and drone attacks.
Context.
The US decision reflects its readiness to continue large-scale military support for Ukraine, adapting the assistance to current challenges: massive shelling, missile attacks from Russia, and new types of air threats.
The package also means that Ukraine's defence is moving towards a more comprehensive air defence architecture, where Patriot systems operate not only as standalone systems but as part of an integrated network with radars, electronic warfare and counter-drone capabilities.
