Is Russia preparing an offensive in the Chernihiv region? The Ukrainian Armed Forces have responded as to whether there is a real threat

The Ukrainian military are urging people to trust only official information and not to share reports of an allegedly imminent offensive.

Ukraine’s military leadership does not rule out attempts by the enemy to extend the front line or launch offensive operations in the north, particularly in the Chernihiv region. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, and the military command emphasise that the situation is under control, and that defensive lines and additional forces are being deployed in line with any potential scenarios.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously warned of the risks of increased enemy activity on the northern borders, citing intelligence reports. According to him, Ukraine is preparing appropriate responses to every scenario: in the event of a genuine attempt at an offensive, troop concentrations in the Chernihiv–Kyiv direction will be rapidly reinforced.

Why is the enemy stirring up tension in the Chernihiv region?

Military analysts and the Centre for Countering Disinformation (CCD) note that the recurring rumours of an «inevitable assault on Chernihiv» form part of a comprehensive information and psychological operation (IPO) by the Kremlin. The enemy is pursuing several objectives:

  1. Withdrawal of reserves: To force General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to redeploy combat-ready units from the challenging eastern and southern sectors (in particular the Pokrovsk and Kurakhiv sectors) to guard the border.

  2. Psychological pressure: To create a climate of panic amongst the civilian population in the border regions and the capital.

  3. Geopolitical blackmail: To attempt to demonstrate the Russian army’s supposedly «limitless resources» in order to put pressure on Ukraine’s Western partners.

Constant readiness and defensive lines

Despite the fact that Russia periodically concentrates certain forces in the border areas of the Bryansk and Kursk regions, as well as uses territory in Belarus for manoeuvres, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky has repeatedly emphasised that the Ukrainian command is monitoring the enemy’s every move.

A large-scale and deeply echeloned defence system has now been established in the Chernihiv region, comprising:

  • Concrete fortifications and long-term firing positions;

  • Extensive minefields and explosive barriers along the state border;

  • Anti-tank trenches and CCTV systems;

  • Reinforced mobile fire teams to combat sabotage groups and drones.

Important: The military notes that, at present, enemy forces near the northern borders are mainly carrying out demonstrative actions. However, the lessons of 2022 have been fully taken on board: the Defence Forces are taking pre-emptive action, so any attempts to break through will be met with a fierce response directly in the border zone.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine urges citizens to rely solely on official reports and not to share unofficial information about the movements of Ukrainian troops. The situation at the border remains fully under the control of our defenders.
