Iran could hold the world hostage in a year - Rubio
Iran could soon acquire such a powerful arsenal of missiles and drones that it would threaten global security. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Details of the application
According to Rubio, the pace of Iran's weapons development is a matter of serious concern in Washington.
«In a year's time, they would have held the whole world hostage. They would have so many missiles and drones that no one would be able to do anything about it,» he stressed.
The State Department believes that these risks have become one of the key factors in increasing pressure on Tehran.
What it means
American officials are increasingly warning of rapid growth in Iranian production:
ballistic missiles,
of attack drones,
high-precision munitions.
In their view, if the current pace continues, Iran could significantly change the balance of power in the region.
Context.
Iran insists that its military programmes are defensive in nature. At the same time, the United States and its allies accuse Tehran of destabilising the Middle East through its support of allied groups and the development of missile and drone technologies.
The latest statements came amid a sharp escalation between Washington and Tehran.
