Caution in statements regarding aid to Ukraine
Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk called on the Polish delegation to exercise caution when making public statements regarding financial aid to Ukraine. This statement was made on the eve of NATO summit in Ankara, where the issue of support for Ukraine will remain the focus of attention.
Tusk emphasised that Warsaw is not changing its position and will continue to support Kyiv in the war against Russia. At the same time, he noted that the Polish government is keen to avoid making rash promises that could lead to additional political or budgetary commitments.
The importance of financial commitments
The Prime Minister emphasised that any new aid packages must take into account the actual capacity of the Polish budget and Poland’s own security needs. “We must be cautious in our statements so as not to create additional obligations,” said Tusk.
Pressure on the EU’s eastern border
Tusk also highlighted the fact that Poland bears a significant burden in safeguarding the European Union’s eastern border. This issue is key to deterring threats from Russia. “Expenditure on defence, border protection and security infrastructure is our contribution to Europe’s collective security,” he emphasised.
Why it matters
Tusk’s statement indicates that Poland continues to support Ukraine, but is seeking to strike a more careful balance between its alliance commitments, domestic budgetary constraints and its own security needs. Against the backdrop of the NATO summit, the issue of aid to Ukraine will remain one of the key concerns for European partners.
