Ukraine plans to obtain information about its citizens staying in the EU to prepare for their potential return. This was announced by Minister of Social Policy Ulyutin, who stressed that the key factor for return is safety and voluntariness of the decision.

Ukraine initiates data collection on citizens in the EU

The Ukrainian government has started working on obtaining data on its citizens currently residing in the European Union. According to information, the Minister of Social Policy Denis Ulyutin stressed that this step is a preparatory stage for organising the possible return of Ukrainians home. He stressed that the issue of returning citizens is being considered in close cooperation with European partners.

Official Kyiv emphasises the need to have up-to-date information on the number and location of Ukrainians' stay abroad. This will allow for more effective planning of social, transport and other support in the event of their return. According to the Minister, Ukraine is committed to ensuring a transparent and safe process for its citizens.

Voluntariness and safety are the main principles

According to Ulyutin, Ukraine wants returning home to be an exclusively voluntary and conscious decision of every citizen. The security situation in the country remains a key factor for the mass return of Ukrainians. The minister stressed that the state will not put pressure on citizens, but will create conditions for their comfortable and safe return.

According to the ministry, appropriate mechanisms of interaction with EU countries are currently being prepared to receive the necessary information in the legal field. This will allow not only to prepare for a possible return, but also to provide Ukrainians with support at all stages of the process.

Preparing to return: challenges and prospects

The return of a large number of citizens from the EU requires careful preparation by the Ukrainian authorities. This includes coordination with European countries, adaptation of social programmes and logistics. The Ministry of Social Policy is reportedly already developing appropriate strategies to support those who decide to return.

Additionally, Ukraine plans to intensify outreach to citizens abroad to explain the possibilities and conditions of return. The government emphasises that every Ukrainian will have the right to choose the time and method of returning home.

Why it matters

Collection of data on Ukrainian citizens in EU countries is an important step in planning public policy and ensuring social stability. This will allow the government to respond promptly to the needs of returnees and ensure that they receive the appropriate level of support.

At the same time, adherence to the principles of voluntary and safe return is key to maintaining public trust in the state. Ukraine demonstrates its readiness for open dialogue with partners and its citizens, which strengthens its position in the international arena.

In the long run, effective cooperation with the EU in this regard will contribute not only to the return of citizens, but also to Ukraine's further integration into the European space.
