Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku today. This is Zelenskyy's first visit to Azerbaijan since the start of the full-scale war. The leaders are discussing five bilateral agreements.

Official start of negotiations

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ilham Aliyev began negotiations in Baku on 25 April. The meeting is taking place in the Presidential Palace of the Azerbaijani capital.

The Ukrainian delegation stresses the importance of dialogue to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. These are Zelenskyy's first personal talks with Aliyev since the start of Russian aggression.

Five new bilateral agreements

According to Zelenskyy, the parties are working on five bilateral agreements at once. Details of the documents have not yet been disclosed.

The agreements are expected to cover key areas of cooperation: economy, energy, security, transport and humanitarian cooperation.

The significance of the visit for Ukraine

This is the first visit of the Ukrainian president to Azerbaijan since the beginning of the war. The visit demonstrates Kyiv's desire to intensify foreign policy contacts in the South Caucasus.

Ukraine views Azerbaijan as a strategic partner in the region.

Position of the parties

Zelenskyy stressed the importance of mutual support and discussion of new formats of cooperation. Azerbaijan remains one of Ukraine's key partners in the post-Soviet space.
