In the footage, the animal – with its short, rounded body and long legs – could be seen walking down the street and climbing the stairs. The video quickly racked up millions of views, after which Jimoty became the subject of memes, drawings and fan-made merchandise.
According to ABC News, a raccoon has been spotted in the Ballard area before. According to older records, it was seen as a cub alongside other raccoons.
Why does Jimoti have such an unusual body shape?
Experts believe that Jimoti was born with short spine syndrome — a rare congenital condition in which the vertebrae do not develop fully. As a result, the animal may have a shortened torso, a curved back and unusual proportions.
