Before restoring the power supply, the specialists completed the installation of the equipment and checked that the networks were working properly.

A Russian attack has damaged one of Ukraine’s most valuable historical monuments

On the night of 15 June, a Russian attack drone hit the Cathedral of the Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The attack caused a fire covering an area of around 800 square metres, and the roof of the monastery’s main church sustained significant damage. Other buildings within the historic complex were also damaged.

The electricity supply will enable the restoration work to continue

Once the power supply to the cathedral has been restored, emergency repair work can resume. Rescue workers have already completed the temporary repair of the damaged roof; the next stage will involve a comprehensive survey of the structures, the development of a restoration plan and the subsequent restoration of the monument. According to preliminary estimates, the full restoration may take around two years.

Background to the event

This incident was the result of Russia’s prolonged aggression against Ukraine, aimed not only at causing material damage but also at destroying the country’s cultural heritage. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, as a World Heritage Site UNESCO, is one of the most important historical and cultural monuments in Ukraine and Europe. Despite the difficult conditions and the constant threat of further attacks, Ukrainian experts continue to work to preserve their cultural heritage. Particular attention is being paid to tactical issues relating to the protection of the site and the restoration of its damaged parts.
