Today, on 21 April 2026, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine announced a proposal to involve police officers in service at the front or in the frontline area. He also announced changes in the training of patrol officers and the use of military and veteran experience.

Proposal to send police officers to the frontline

Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klimenko suggested sending all police officers to the frontline or near the frontline for 1-2 months. According to him, this will improve the combat training of police personnel. The proposal is not binding at the moment, but is seen as one of the possible steps to strengthen the defence capability and cooperation of law enforcement agencies.

A new approach to patrol police training

According to the new plans, patrol police officers will take turns living at the training grounds. This should ensure better preparation for tasks in challenging conditions. It is also noted that the training process will involve instructors from among the military who have combat experience in the 1st and 2nd Corps of the National Guard and the State Border Guard Service.

The role of veterans in the training system

Veterans who will be demobilised will be offered to continue their service in the police combat training system. This should facilitate the transfer of practical knowledge and experience to new police officers. According to the Interior Minister, the involvement of veterans will improve the level of training of patrol officers and ensure an effective exchange of experience between different law enforcement agencies.

Context of police reform

These initiatives are part of a broader wartime police reform strategy. The MoIA continues to implement changes aimed at increasing the combat capability and adapting its law enforcement units to new challenges.
