In Kyiv two students sixth-grade students made a fake video about an alleged attack on the lyceum. After the parents' complaints, the school administration called the police, who promptly increased security. Law enforcement officers found out that the video was a joke, and the students' parents were brought to administrative responsibility.
How the fake video of the attack on the lyceum appeared
According to the police, two sixth-graders in Kyiv created a fake video in which they talked about preparing an attack on one of the capital's lyceums. The publication of the video caused concern among the students' parents, who immediately contacted the school administration. After the administration was notified, the police immediately responded and sent units to strengthen security on the territory of the lyceum.
Law enforcement officials emphasise that such incidents are treated very seriously, especially in the context of increased attention to security in educational institutions.
Police actions and investigation results
Upon arrival at the scene, the juvenile police and cyber police were involved in the investigation. They quickly identified the students who had posted the fake video. According to law enforcement officers, the students explained that the video was a joke and was not intended to intimidate their classmates or cause panic.
The students were given a preventive talk about the inadmissibility of such actions. Administrative reports were drawn up against their parents for Article 184 The Code of Administrative Offences of Ukraine, which provides for liability for improper performance of parental duties.
Liability for fake news
Law enforcement officials emphasise that even jokes in the form of fake threats can have serious consequences. Such actions force the police to spend resources on verifying information and strengthening security measures. In addition, such situations can cause panic among students, parents, and staff of educational institutions.
According to the law, both minors and their parents or guardians are liable for false reports of threats or other similar actions. The police urge parents to talk to their children about the consequences of such «jokes».
Why it matters
The incident in Kyiv once again highlights the importance of vigilance and a responsible attitude to the information shared by children online. Even when meant as a joke, fake threat messages can destabilise the learning process and cause unnecessary stress for all participants in the educational environment.
The strengthening of security measures after such incidents demonstrates that law enforcement is taking potential threats seriously. At the same time, this creates an additional burden on the police and educational institutions.
Preventive work with children and parental responsibility are key factors in preventing such incidents from happening again in the future. An open dialogue between schools, parents and the police will help to create a safe information space for adolescents.
