On 12 September, Lutsk came under a massive attack by Russian drones. Local Telegram channels reported that a passenger train at the railway station had been hit. Ukrzaliznytsia subsequently confirmed strikes on railway infrastructure in Lutsk and Fastiv and stated that passengers had been evacuated in good time — there were no casualties.
In Lutsk, a drone collided with a train at the station
An air raid alert was declared in the Lutsk district on the afternoon of 12 September. The military warned of Russian drones heading towards the regional capital, and explosions were heard in the city after 3.00 pm. The acting head of the Volyn Regional State Administration Roman Romanyuk declared about a large-scale UAV attack and urged residents to remain in shelters.
Local Telegram channels reported that one of the drones struck a passenger train that was at Lutsk railway station. According to preliminary accounts from eyewitnesses, there were no passengers in the carriages at the time of the impact. A major fire broke out following the impact.
Ukrzaliznytsia subsequently confirmed that Russian troops had once again attacked the railway infrastructure.
«As things stand, there have been strikes in Lutsk and Fastiv. Thanks to the timely detection of the threat by the Ukrainian Railways monitoring team and the evacuation of passengers, there have been no casualties,» the company said.
The attack on the railway in Lutsk has therefore been officially confirmed, although «Ukrzaliznytsia» has not yet disclosed the exact nature of the damage.
Kovel also came under attack
Almost at the same time, reports of explosions began to come in from Kovel.
An air raid alert was issued in the Kovel district at 15:31. Less than half an hour later, explosions were heard in the town, and local Telegram channels reported an attack on the railway station.
At the time of publication, there had not yet been any official confirmation that the station in Kovel had been hit, so this information remains preliminary.
The Air Force had issued a warning about drones heading towards Lutsk
Throughout the day, the Air Force repeatedly detected Russian drones travelling on a westerly course.
In particular, the military reported that a jet-powered UAV from the Ternopil region heading south into Volyn, bound for Lutsk. New jet-powered drones were also spotted in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, from where they were heading west.
At the time of the attack, monitoring sources estimated the number of UAVs still in the airspace to be approximately 44–50 units. However, this figure has not been independently confirmed by the Air Force, so it should be regarded as an estimate provided by monitoring channels.
An attack on a petrol station in Korets has been reported in the Rivne region
Against the backdrop of an all-out the movement of drones towards the west There have also been reports of a new attack on fuel infrastructure.
The local newspaper *Rivne Vechirne* reported that in Kortsi in the Rivne region A loud explosion was heard, followed by smoke rising from the scene. According to a local Telegram channel, an attack drone reportedly struck a petrol station. At the time of reporting, there was no information regarding any casualties or fatalities.
Also, during the day, the Air Force issued warnings about UAVs moving from the Zhytomyr region towards the Rivne region.
There is currently no official confirmation of all the details of the attack on the petrol station in Korets.
Russia continues to target the railway
The strike on Lutsk was yet another attack by the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian railway network.
«Ukrzaliznytsia» has recently been regularly reporting on targeted attacks on railway stations, stations and rolling stock. Following the attacks, the company is altering routes, organising coach transfers and evacuating passengers.
Today’s strike in Lutsk has once again demonstrated that the key element of defence remains the early detection of drones and the timely evacuation of people. Thanks to this, according to Ukrainian Railways, during the attack on the railway infrastructure None of the passengers were injured.
The situation in western Ukraine remains tense, and the attack is still ongoing at the time of publication. Residents of Volyn, Rivne, Zhytomyr and other western regions are urged not to ignore air-raid sirens and to take shelter.
