Ukraine is introducing strict new rules for motorists, covering window tinting, technical inspection and parking. An automated system for recording violations will increase control on the roads, and repeated violations may result in the car being towed to the impound lot. In large cities, parking rates will increase and the presence of inspectors will no longer be necessary.

Briefly about the main points
  • Ukraine is tightening control over glass tinting with increased fines.
  • Technical inspection is being returned for commercial vehicles, and later for all passenger cars.
  • Parking in megacities will rise in price by 20% and become automated.
  • The cameras will record red light running and driving in the bus lane.
  • By the end of the summer, more than 150 new automatic fixation systems will be installed.

Strict glass tinting checks and fines

Law enforcement officers are beginning to monitor the light transmission of car windows using special devices called tau meters. The fine for non-compliance with tinting standards is UAH 510. In the event of a repeated offence, the driver receives an official order to rectify the deficiency within 10 days. If the requirement is ignored or under certain circumstances, the car may be immediately towed to the impound lot.

Return of the mandatory technical inspection

Ukraine officially restores the inspection for commercial vehicles - taxis, courier services and car sharing. Industry experts predict that this rule will be extended to all private passenger cars. If serious faults are detected during the inspection, the vehicle will be banned from use until they are fixed.

Raising tariffs and automating parking

In Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa and Dnipro parking tariffs will increase on average by 20%. The city authorities will expand paid parking zones and equip them with additional cameras. From now on, fines for violations of stopping or parking rules will be issued automatically based on photo and video recording, without the involvement of parking inspectors.

Expanding the functions of the automatic violation detection system

Cameras on the roads now record not only speeding, but also running red traffic lights and driving in the public transport lane. Car owners who violate these rules will receive automatic decisions - «letters of happiness». By the end of the summer, more than 150 new automatic detection systems are to be installed on key roads and in cities, which will significantly strengthen control over compliance with traffic rules.
