Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv: six people have been killed

On the night of 20 August, Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv. Damage from the strikes was reported at at least 12 locations in the Solomyanskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi districts. According to the latest figures from the Kyiv City Military Administration, five people were killed and a further 23 were injured. The Russian attack caused the destruction of residential buildings and widespread fires. A medical facility, an educational establishment, warehouses, industrial sites and vehicles were damaged. Rescue workers are continuing to work at the sites of the strikes and clear the rubble.

In the Solomyanskyi district, the upper floors of a building have been destroyed

Some of the most serious damage was recorded in the Solomyanskiy district. In a nine-storey residential block, the upper floors were damaged and a fire broke out. At other locations, residential buildings, garages and cars were damaged.

A medical facility was also damaged during the attack – the windows in the building were shattered. Earlier reports had mentioned people trapped in a residential building and in a shelter. Rescue workers and medical staff were on the scene.

In total, in the capital, as a result of the night-time attack 23 people were injured. According to figures released by the Mayor of Kyiv whilst the aftermath was being dealt with, 14 people were hospitalised.

Warehouses were on fire in the Sviatoshynskyi district

In the Svyatoshynskyi district, the effects of the attack were observed, in particular, on the premises of an industrial site. Large-scale fires broke out in the warehouses.

Rescue workers were operating at several locations at once. Whilst emergency rescue operations were under way, reports came in of people trapped under the rubble.

Parts of the Sviatoshyn and Solomyanskiy districts were left without electricity following the strikes.

A major fire has broken out in the Darnytsia district

The effects of the Russian strike were also reported in the Darnytskyi district. Fires broke out there and non-residential buildings were damaged. Overall, the State Emergency Service has reported numerous fires and damage in three districts of the capital.

Rescue workers are continuing to inspect damaged buildings, extinguish fires and clear away debris. Consequently, the final figures regarding the extent of the damage may change.

The death toll has risen to five

Initial reports following the attack indicated that at least four people had been killed. The Kyiv City Military Administration subsequently updated the figures: As of this morning, six people are known to have died and 23 have been injured.

The effects of the attack have been recorded at more than 12 locations. Residential buildings, medical and educational facilities, warehouses and vehicles have been damaged. Emergency rescue operations are ongoing.
