A Russian attack damaged a building belonging to one of the city’s infrastructure facilities. Following the strike, a fierce fire broke out and thick smoke rose from the site of the impact.
The area affected by the fire was approximately 1,500 square metres. The significant scale of the blaze and the nature of the damage required the deployment of additional personnel and specialist equipment.
Information regarding the purpose of the targeted facility is not currently being disclosed. The report also contains no details of any fatalities or injuries.
More than 30 rescue workers were called in to tackle the fire
Thirty-two rescue service personnel were working at the site of the Russian strike. Eleven fire engines and specialist vehicles were deployed to deal with the aftermath of the attack.
The rescue workers’ efforts were hampered by the large area affected by the fire, heavy smoke and damage to the building. The main priority was to prevent the fire from spreading further across the infrastructure site.
After a lengthy operation, the fire has been completely extinguished. Experts are to inspect the building, assess the full extent of the damage and check the area for any hazardous debris.
Attacks on infrastructure pose additional risks
Attacks on infrastructure facilities pose a danger not only because of the immediate damage they cause. Large-scale fires can spread to neighbouring buildings, disrupt the work of municipal services and pose a threat to people in the vicinity.
The deployment of 32 firefighters and 11 pieces of equipment is indicative of the significant scale of the fire. The rapid containment of the fire prevented it from spreading further; however, a further assessment is required to evaluate the full extent of the damage caused by the fire.
Residents of Chernihiv are urged not to ignore air-raid sirens, to take shelter in the event of danger, and to stay away from areas targeted by Russian strikes until the emergency services have completed their work.
