The threat of new large-scale attacks
US intelligence assesses the likelihood of two or three large-scale Russian strikes on Ukraine over the next ten days as high. According to reports in the media, the Kremlin may seek to make the most of the current shortage of interceptor missiles for Ukrainian air defence systems. This could lead to new combined attacks involving ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones.
Following the recent heavy shelling, the Ukrainian leadership has repeatedly emphasised that stocks of missiles for the Patriot systems are insufficient to intercept large numbers of ballistic targets. The President Volodymyr Zelenskyy He had previously reported that Ukrainian intelligence had received information that Russia was preparing new large-scale strikes. He urged citizens not to ignore air-raid sirens.
Calls to partners
Against the backdrop of these threats, the Ukrainian authorities are actively calling on their international partners to urgently strengthen their air defences. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasised the need for additional systems to be supplied as soon as possible AIR DEFENCE and the missiles used in them. At present, reports of possible new strikes are circulating, citing media sources, but there has been no official confirmation from the US government or US intelligence.
Why it matters
The sustained attacks of recent days indicate that Russia continues to rely on wearing down Ukraine’s air defence system. Reports of possible new strikes, although unconfirmed, are causing serious concern amongst the Ukrainian leadership and international partners.
