Explosions at the Mayak plant: initial accounts
On the night of 1 July, Ukrainian long-range drones struck the Russian defence plant «Mayak», located in Penza. According to local residents and Russian Telegram channels, a series of explosions was heard in the vicinity of the plant, accompanied by smoke and fires. An air raid alert in the Penza region lasted several hours, and witnesses reported hearing the sounds of air defence systems in operation.
No official figures on the extent of the damage to the facility have yet been released. At the time of publication, the Ukrainian side had not commented on the outcome of the strike either.
The importance of the Mayak plant to the Russian defence industry
The Mayak plant is a key component of the Russian military-industrial complex. It specialises in the production of radio-electronic systems, electronic modules, control equipment and components for military hardware. The plant’s products are used in the manufacture of modern Russian weapon systems, making it a target for Ukrainian strikes.
Why strikes against businesses are important
Over the past few months, Ukraine has been actively carrying out strikes against targets within the Russian military-industrial complex. The main aim of these operations is to reduce arms production, disrupt the logistics of component supplies and limit the Russian army’s ability to replenish its equipment stocks. Attacks on factories deep within Russian territory, such as «Mayak», are evidence of the increasing range of Ukrainian strike drones.
A growing threat to Russia’s defence
Penza, situated more than 600 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, demonstrates that the Russian air defence system is unable to cope with new challenges. Despite claims of strengthened defences, attacks on military-industrial complex facilities are becoming increasingly frequent, which could significantly impact the production of military electronics and other components required for the manufacture of weapons.
