Princess Bajrakitiyabha of Thailand, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has died at the age of 47 after spending several years in a coma caused by serious health problems. Circumstances of death and state of health
Princess Bajrakityabha, known as Princess Pa, … was admitted to hospital in December 2022 after suddenly losing consciousness following a heart attack whilst visiting Nakhon Ratchasima Province. She was flown by helicopter to Bangkok for treatment, but her condition deteriorated due to a series of complications, including an intra-abdominal infection, colitis, arrhythmias and a blood clotting disorder.
The Princess in public life and her career
Bajrakityabha was born on 7 December 1978 into the family of the then heir to the throne Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsavali. She studied law at Cornell University, where she obtained a master’s degree and a doctorate, and worked as a lawyer at the Office of the Attorney General of Thailand from 2006 to 2011. From 2012 to 2014, she served as Thailand’s Ambassador to Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia.
Social activities and military service
The princess launched a charitable project aimed at supporting the rights of female prisoners, particularly those who are pregnant. In 2017, she was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for South-East Asia by the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. In 2021, Bajrakityabha joined the army, receiving the rank of general and the post of Chief of Staff of the Royal Security Service.
The royal context and subsequent events
The princess was one of King Vajiralongkorn’s three children who hold official titles and are in line to the throne. Last October, Thailand’s Queen Mother died at the age of 93. The Palace announced that royal funeral rites would be held, and the government plans to declare a period of national mourning following her passing.
