Russia is hoping for victory, not for agreements
Assistant to the President of Russia Yuriy Ushakov stated that the Russian Federation is focused on victory rather than on fulfilling its agreements with the United States. According to him, one of the parties – evidently the US – had failed to fulfil its part of the bargain and honour the agreements. Ushakov did not specify exactly what these agreements entailed, but noted that he had not previously ruled out their implementation.
This statement served as yet another confirmation that Russia has no plans to abandon its ambitions in the conflict with Ukraine. Previously, Russian officials had spoken of informal «understandings» that had emerged following the meeting Donald Trump і Vladimir Putin in August 2025 in Anchorage. However, the details of these agreements remain unknown.
The media speculated that this might have been about a possible a ceasefire and potential territorial concessions by Ukraine, particularly regarding the Donbas. However, Ukraine strongly opposed such initiatives. The US President also denied that any agreements had been reached, which raised further doubts about the Russian Federation’s intentions.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that, according to US officials, the US is not abandoning its mediation efforts, yet negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have effectively stalled. This creates additional difficulties in finding ways to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
