Russian intelligence has declared its readiness to use far-fetched grounds for aggression against Latvia, accusing Kyiv and Riga of joint actions against Russia. The Baltic states are advised not to wait for the first explosions and to prepare for possible attacks.
Russia is creating an information pretext for aggression
According to the Russian side, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service has made a number of accusations against Latvia and Ukraine. In particular, it is alleged that Riga agreed to conduct an operation against Russia, as well as the deployment of Ukrainian military personnel at the Adazhi, Celija, Lielvarde, Daugavpils and Jekabpils bases in Latvia. In addition, the Russian side claims that Ukraine plans to launch drones not only through air corridors, but also directly from the territory of the Baltic States.
Baltic states under threat: what we know
Russian intelligence statements have all the hallmarks of information preparation for possible provocations or even military action against Latvia. This rhetoric is reminiscent of the information campaign that Russia conducted before its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Back then, Moscow also invented numerous “pretexts” for aggression, which were later used to justify the attack.
Residents of the Baltic States are already being advised to pack their bags and prepare shelters. The reason is a real threat to civilians, as Russian propaganda can be used as a justification for a new wave of escalation. In fact, even without any real action on the part of Ukraine or Latvia, Russia can use these statements as a casus belli.
Propaganda and implications for the region
Analysts note that such an information campaign may be aimed at intimidating Baltic societies and justifying possible destabilising actions. This is not the first time Russia has used such methods, spreading false claims to create tension and justify aggression.
For the Baltic States, this means an increased level of anxiety among the population, as well as the need to prepare for various scenarios. The information resilience of society and preparedness for emergency situations remain important.
Why it matters
Russia's statements about the “Ukrainian military presence” in Latvia and the preparation of attacks from the Baltic states set a dangerous precedent for the region. Russia has already used similar information pretexts to start a war in Ukraine. Today, Baltic residents must be prepared for any scenario, as the risk of a real attack increases with each new statement by the Russian side.
