US President Donald Trump has extended the state of emergency related to the threat from Russia for a year. This means that Russian vessels will no longer be able to dock in US ports.
Extension of the state of emergency
President Donald Trump has decided to extend the state of emergency against Russia for another year. This is stated in the message White House, published in the Federal Register on 17 April. The state of emergency was first declared on 21 April 2022 by the previous US president Joe Biden.
The decision provides for restrictions on the movement and berthing of vessels linked to Russia in US ports. The US Secretary of Homeland Security remains authorised to regulate these issues.
Motives for restrictions
The White House emphasises that the policies and actions of the Russian government continue to create an emergency situation for US international relations. In this regard, the state of emergency and the relevant powers have been extended.
The restrictions are intended to strengthen pressure on Russia and protect US national interests amid ongoing international disputes.
Context and sanctions
Earlier, the US Treasury Department removed three Russian vessels from the sanctions list. At the same time, after the temporary exemption expired, US sanctions against Russian oil came into full force.
Restrictions on vessels remain in place, and there is no information on any possible easing of these measures in the coming year.
