The US has set up Task Force Iron Gate to monitor Iranian shipments

The new unit will be based in Tampa, Florida, where CENTCOM’s headquarters are located. It will comprise around 20 military and civilian specialists who will coordinate efforts with other US government agencies.

The group’s main task will be to identify and halt the transport of modern weapon systems, military equipment components, sanctioned materials and dual-use goods. Particular attention will be paid to financial flows which Washington considers to be illegal and linked to the activities of Iranian military bodies.

The new group’s area of responsibility will cover Iran’s overland trade routes and the Caspian Sea. However, CENTCOM has not announced a complete halt to civilian trade across Iran’s borders. The main focus is on tightening controls on goods subject to US sanctions.

The naval blockade has already curbed oil exports by $25 billion

Creation Task Force Iron Gate This marked the continuation of the months-long naval blockade of Iran, which is being enforced by US military forces in the region.

According to CENTCOM’s estimates, the restrictions imposed have prevented Tehran from exporting crude oil worth more than $25 billion. This is the US command’s estimate of blocked shipments, rather than a confirmed figure for Iran’s direct budgetary losses.

The naval blockade applies to vessels travelling to or from Iranian ports. Exceptions are made for humanitarian cargo. At the same time, the US military states that monitoring of maritime traffic will continue alongside the work of the new unit.

Previously, US efforts had focused mainly on maritime routes. Washington is now seeking to step up its efforts to counter the use of alternative routes through which Iran might obtain essential materials or carry out shipments in circumvention of sanctions.

Washington is trying to curb the rebuilding of Iran’s military capabilities

Commander of CENTCOM, Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the creation of a new group would strengthen cooperation between US agencies and make it more difficult for Iran to fund the armed groups it supports.

According to Cooper, the US command is also seeking to limit Tehran’s ability to rebuild its arms manufacturing facilities and replenish its military stocks.

For Iran, land corridors are of particular importance in the face of a naval blockade. The country shares borders with Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, and also has access to the Caspian Sea. However, the US command has not yet provided details of specific mechanisms for monitoring transport through the territories of neighbouring states.

The new initiative has emerged against the backdrop of attempts by Washington and Tehran to resume negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Whilst maintaining military pressure, the US is also engaged in diplomatic talks mediated by Qatar.

CENTCOM announced the decision to establish Task Force Iron Gate on 7 November. The unit will coordinate inter-agency measures against shipments subject to sanctions, whilst the current maritime restrictions will remain in force.
