US negotiators have arrived in Islamabad for consultations on Iran's nuclear programme. The talks are being mediated by the Pakistani side.
The visit to Pakistan was a response to the Iran's refusal from direct contacts with the United States. Washington is trying to find new channels of communication to reduce tensions in the region.
Iran rejects direct talks
The Iranian government has confirmed that it will not take part in direct talks with the US in Islamabad. Official Tehran insists on a multilateral format with the participation of intermediaries.
Iranian officials said that any contacts with the US delegation would be possible only with the participation of third parties. At the same time, Iran expressed readiness for consultations with Pakistan.
Reaction of the international community
European diplomats called on the parties to exercise restraint and dialogue. EU representatives stressed the importance of avoiding escalation.
Diplomatic sources report that the consultations in Pakistan are seen as an interim step towards the resumption of broader talks on Iran's nuclear programme.
