The Russian city of Tuapse has been experiencing an environmental disaster for four days now. After the attack on the marine terminal, the city was covered by an «oil rain», and the concentration of carcinogens in the air is significantly higher than normal.

Exceedance of toxic substance standards
According to local services, the concentration of benzene, xylene and soot in the air is 2-3 times higher than the permissible limits. Benzene is a class I carcinogen and can cause cancer, including leukaemia.
The combustion of petroleum products produces toxic substances hazardous to health. Residents are advised not to leave their homes unless necessary.

Local authorities advise staying at home with windows and doors closed. It is recommended to go outside only when wearing respirators.

Smog spreading to neighbouring cities
Smog from the fire has already reached Sochi, Armavir and Stavropol. Experts warn that the pollution could soon cover Krasnodar.
