Poland is on the verge of a possible exit from the European Union. Donald Tusk said that the threat of Polexit is no longer hypothetical. The reason for this is the actions of domestic political forces, which, according to Tusk, are cooperating with external players.
Tusk's statement on the threat of Polexit
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that the country's withdrawal from the EU has become a real possibility. He stressed that Eurosceptic forces in Poland are working in favour of Russia, the American MAGA movement and right-wing European politicians, in particular Viktor Orban.
According to Tusk, the Confederation faction and the majority of the Law and Justice (PiS) party are actually pushing Poland to break with Brussels. In his opinion, this is no longer a hypothetical scenario.
Political crisis and blocking of funding
The situation escalated after President Karol Navrotskyi blocked the law on defence loans from the EU. We are talking about 43.7 billion euros that were supposed to be used to finance the Polish army.
It was planned that defence spending would increase to 5% of the country's GDP. Blocking these funds creates risks to defence capabilities and increases political tensions.
Public opinion and comparisons with Brexit
Experts note that despite the majority of Poles supporting EU membership, one in four is ready to vote for the exit. This is reminiscent of the dynamics of sentiment in the UK before Brexit.
The growth of Euroscepticism is attributed to the influence of political forces that oppose integration with the EU. Such sentiments increase the risk of political destabilisation of the country.
Context.
In recent months, political disagreements between the government, the president and the opposition have intensified in the country. Poland has been a member of the EU since 2004. The country's exit from the union could have significant consequences for the region and Europe as a whole.
