The Prosecutor General's Office has announced the detention of an SBU officer on suspicion of passing data to the Russian FSB. According to the investigation, it is a case of leaking information about operatives and counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine between October 2025 and April 2026.
Investigation of the SBU data leak
Prosecutor General's Office announces detention of major Security Services of Ukraine on suspicion of passing information to the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation. According to the information released by the Prosecutor General's Office, the detention took place today, 12 May 2026, as part of criminal proceedings on high treason.
The investigation established that the suspect had access to SBU information resources and collected data on employees involved in operational and investigative and counterintelligence activities. The information also concerned the facilities where special events were held or planned.
Scheme of transmission of information and suspicions
According to investigators, the suspect transmitted information to a representative of the Russian Federal Security Service from October 2025 to April 2026 via the Telegram messenger. She used her father, who resides in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, to contact the Russian special services.
Law enforcement officials emphasise that the information could have been used to organise intelligence, subversive and sabotage activities against Ukraine. The information could also help in attempts to neutralise the SBU's counterintelligence capabilities.
Legal status and further actions
The SBU major was detained on 12 May 2026. A notice of suspicion of high treason committed under martial law is being prepared under Article 111(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Prosecutors plan to request a measure of restraint in the form of detention.
At the same time Office of the Prosecutor General reminds that according to the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation is ongoing and all the circumstances of the case are still being established.
Why it matters
The leakage of official information from the SBU to the Russian FSB potentially poses a serious threat to Ukraine's national security. The disclosure of information about operatives and counterintelligence officers could put not only their lives at risk, but also the effectiveness of the entire intelligence service.
Attempts by Russian special services to gain access to strategic information are part of the hybrid war against Ukraine. Identifying and bringing to justice those involved in such crimes is critical to preserving the country's defence capability.
Investigations into such incidents demonstrate the readiness of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies to respond promptly to threats and protect the country's interests even under martial law.
