Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has introduced two sets of sanctions against Russian military and civilian vessels. The list includes commanders involved in attacks on Ukrainian cities and ships carrying weapons and equipment.
Basic context
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced new sanctions against the Russian military and the so-called “shadow fleet” RUSSIAN FEDERATION. The first package includes 127 military personnel, including commanders of long-range aviation and missile units, who were involved in large-scale strikes on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure.
These soldiers are linked to the attacks on the Okhmatdyt children's medical centre, as well as strikes on Ternopil, Sumy, Chernihiv, the village of Groza and the bombing of Mariupol. The Ukrainian authorities emphasise that the sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Russia and make the war more difficult.
Sanctions against civilian vessels
The second package of sanctions covered 29 civilian vessels, which, according to the Ukrainian side, Russia uses to transport weapons, military equipment and personnel. These ships are considered to be part of a logistics network supporting Russian military operations.
The restrictions on ships are intended to interrupt the supply of material resources for the armed conflict. The authorities in Kyiv stress that such steps are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at weakening Russia's military capabilities and protecting Ukraine's territorial integrity.
The impact of sanctions on the course of the war
Zelenskyy emphasises that these sanctions not only personal, but also aimed at the infrastructure that supports the aggression. The introduction of the lists of military and civilian vessels demonstrates Ukraine's readiness to take a comprehensive approach to fighting the aggressor.
Analysts note that such restrictions could complicate Russia's logistics and reduce the effectiveness of its strikes on civilian targets. At the same time, it is a signal to the international community of Ukraine's determination to fight on all fronts - political, economic and military.
Global context and next steps
The imposition of sanctions against the Russian military and the «shadow fleet» reflects the international trend of increasing pressure on Russia due to its aggressive actions. The Ukrainian authorities continue to work on expanding the sanctions lists to limit Russia's ability to wage war as much as possible.
These decisions support the efforts of Ukraine's allies in the world, who are also imposing restrictions on Russian structures. A comprehensive approach to sanctions policy is aimed at weakening the aggressor's military potential and accelerating the end of the conflict in Ukraine's favour.
