Critics who have already watched the first episodes are delighted. Lucy Mangan in her review for The Guardian called the new show «a crazy, just wild ride» and an absolute masterclass in building tension.

The third coming of the classics: from Mitchum to Bardem

The project is based on a cult novel John D. Macdonald «The Executioners (1957). This is the third film adaptation of this story. In 1962, the world shuddered at the confrontation between Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peca. In 1991. Martin Scorsese released its legendary remake, where the lawyer was played by Nick Nolte, and the psychopathic Max Cady, completely grey with rage Robert De Niro.

In 2026, showrunner Nick Antoska expanded this story to include 10-episode thriller, adapted to modern realities. And it seems that the new version will exceed all expectations.

An actor's triumph: The Bardem who surpassed De Niro?

The main roles of lawyers Anna and Tom Bowden were played by the stars Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson. However, the real heart and horror of the series was Javier Bardem, who played the antagonist Max Cady.

«Bardem takes absolute, pure pleasure in terrorising everyone around him,» the critic writes. "His Cady is perhaps the best interpretation of the character in history. He's genuinely charming, convincing, even sympathetic for a moment, and then he becomes so creepy that he makes Robert De Niro look like Danny DeVito.".

In the story, Cady served 17 years for the murder of his wife. His lawyer Anna (Amy Adams) insisted on his imprisonment. Now Cady is free due to new evidence and seeks revenge. Moreover, Anna has since married the prosecutor in his case (Patrick Wilson).

Modern context and ideal «screamers»

The new Cape Fear has moved away from the banal confrontation between good and evil. Now the plot is full of grey moral areas. Were Anna and her husband really clean before the law 17 years ago? The viewer will have to unravel a tangle of dirty family secrets.

In addition, the creators have filigree woven into the classic plot topical issues of our time:

  • The use of artificial intelligence;

  • Catfishing (creating fake identities on the Internet);

  • Cancellation culture and online rumours;

  • A total crisis of trust in state institutions.

The direction of the series is called impeccable. It is interesting that Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are executive producers of the project, which guarantees the high quality of the product. The creators promise not only psychological pressure, but also first-class jump scares that will make even the most resilient viewers shudder.

«If by the third episode you don't want to take a tranquiliser, then you are Max Cady, and I have to run away as far as possible,» the author of the review concludes.

The premiere of Cape Fear will take place this Friday. Don't miss the main thriller of the season!
