A new funding package for transport modernisation
The European Commission has launched a new call for proposals worth €1.1 billion, which will be the last under the current long-term EU budget for 2021–2027. This funding package aims to support the implementation of key transport initiatives, including plans to develop high-speed rail links and improve the road transport sector.
The funding will also help to strengthen maritime connectivity, in line with the EU’s recently presented strategies on maritime transport and ports. Importantly, the new funding package will also strengthen Europe’s defence capability, addressing military mobility issues and supporting the implementation of the EU’s military mobility package.
Main areas of funding
As part of this competition, particular attention is paid to rail transport, decarbonisation maritime transport and military mobility. Support is also provided for the electrification of road transport and ground operations at airports, the roll-out of charging infrastructure at seaports and inland ports, and the digitalisation of road transport.
It is important to note that Ukraine and Moldova are also included in this call for proposals under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, which demonstrates the deepening of their transport links with the EU. The CEF is the EU’s key instrument for funding and implementing the TEN-T policy. The projects selected under the 2026 call for proposals will help to create smarter, more efficient and more sustainable transport infrastructure, improve interoperability and strengthen the resilience of transport networks across the EU.
