Marine drones are changing the nature of warfare
Maritime drones are becoming one of the key elements of modern naval warfare. Ukrainian drones Magura, which were successfully deployed against the Russian Federation’s Black Sea Fleet, have set an example for military strategists around the world. During recent exercises in the Philippines, the US military used Magura unmanned surface vehicles, developed in Ukraine, for the first time in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to the exercise scenario, US special forces remotely guided maritime drones towards a decommissioned target vessel, which was then successfully destroyed. It was the Ukrainian Magura drones that gained notoriety following a series of successful attacks on ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, demonstrating the effectiveness of these relatively inexpensive maritime drones in modern warfare.
The US and its allies are preparing for a possible conflict with China
Against the backdrop of growing tensions surrounding Taiwan The armed forces of the US, Japan, Australia and other countries are actively expanding their programmes to develop maritime drones. Experts emphasise that unmanned surface and underwater vehicles can conduct maritime reconnaissance, lay minefields, attack ships, launch missiles and carry out rescue operations. The main advantage of such systems is their significantly lower cost compared to warships and their ability to carry out missions without putting crews at risk.
Taiwan is banking on maritime drones
Taiwan is paying particular attention to new technologies. As part of the ‘Hellscape’ defence concept, which is supported by the US, the Taiwan Strait is to be saturated with large numbers of low-cost anti-ship weapons capable of deterring a potential Chinese amphibious operation. Taiwan is already developing its own strike maritime drone, the Kaui-Chi. The government plans to procure 1,320 such drones, investing approximately 888 million dollars.
