Ukraine has received French Crotale air defence systems: what can they shoot down?

The French Crotale NG anti-aircraft missile systems are strengthening the close-range tier of Ukraine’s air defence. These are mobile, short-range systems designed primarily to protect key facilities from aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones flying at low and extremely low altitudes. The Crotale is not equivalent to the Patriot and is not designed to counter «Iskanders» or «Kinzhals», but it can cover that part of the sky where the use of long-range, expensive systems is impractical. The French Ministry of Defence has officially confirmed the transfer of two Crotale NG systems to Ukraine, and in 2026, Kyiv expressed interest in additional systems and missiles for them.

Crotale NG — the final line of defence for critical infrastructure

Crotale NG belongs to the class SHORAD — short-range air defence systems. The French Air and Space Force uses such systems to provide air cover for military bases, strategic installations and areas where major events are held.

The French Ministry of Defence describes the Crotale NG as a system for engaging aerial targets operating in at low and very low altitudes. In June 2026, the French military once again deployed the Crotale to protect the airspace during the G7 summit.

For Ukraine, this means, first and foremost, targeted protection of a specific site: a power station, a command post, an airfield, a warehouse, an industrial facility or other critical infrastructure.

That is precisely why Crotale complements rather than replaces Patriot, SAMP/T, NASAMS or IRIS-T.

What can Crotale be used to treat?

The main objectives of the complex are:

  • cruise missiles;
  • attack drones;
  • aircraft;
  • helicopters;
  • other low-flying aerial targets.

The US ODIN database also lists tactical missiles and air-launched air-to-ground weapons as potential targets for the Crotale NG.

It is particularly important for Ukraine that the complex is capable of operating in cruise missiles, which often attempt to evade air defence systems at low altitude.

The Crotale can also be used against attack UAVs. However, deploying a VT-1 missile against a low-cost drone is not always the most cost-effective option. It therefore makes sense to use such systems primarily when a drone poses a direct threat to a critical facility or when other, cheaper interception methods are unable to destroy it.

Can the Crotale shoot down «Shaheds»?»

Yes, technically, the Crotale NG is capable of intercepting Shahed-type drones.

The system has its own radar, thermal imaging and optical equipment, and is therefore capable of detecting and tracking low-flying targets day and night.

The French Ministry of Defence notes that the system utilises several sensors simultaneously and is capable of tracking targets using either radar or electro-optical means. This is particularly useful when the enemy is employing electronic warfare measures.

Within the Ukrainian air defence system, the Crotale can act as the final missile barrier in front of a protected site if a drone has breached the preceding defences.

Can the Crotale shoot down cruise missiles?

Namely. Cruise missiles are one of the most important targets for the Crotale NG.

The system was designed to engage high-speed aerial targets at short range. The VT-1 missile accelerates to a speed of over Mach 3.5, that is, about three and a half times faster than the speed of sound.

This enables the Crotale to react quickly to a target once it has been detected.

For Ukraine, such a system could be useful against Russian cruise missiles that approach their targets at low altitudes.

But what about the «Iskanders» and «Kinzhals»?

Here, the complex’s capabilities are fundamentally different.

Crotale NG is not a specialised missile defence system designed to intercept modern ballistic missiles.

Against the «Iskander-M» or aeroballistic «Daggers»Ukraine primarily uses systems of the class" Patriot, and, in the future, the newer SAMP/T systems with their corresponding missiles.

By way of comparison, the French Ministry of Defence explicitly describes the SAMP/T NG as a system designed to counter ballistic and even future hypersonic threats. The Crotale has a different role — short-range engagement of low-flying aerial targets.

Crotale should therefore not be referred to as a countermeasure against ballistic threats.

What is the range of the Crotale NG?

The system uses a high-speed anti-aircraft missile VT-1.

These specifications are provided in documents from the French system and the American military database ODIN.

For example, a missile can intercept a target 8 km away in approximately 10 seconds after the launch.

The Crotale is equipped with its own radar and thermal imaging system

One of Crotale NG’s strengths is its comprehensive nature.

The following are hosted on a single system:

  • surveillance radar, which searches for aerial targets;
  • tracking radar, which precisely determines the position of the target;
  • FLIR thermal imaging camera;
  • daylight optical camera;
  • «friend or foe» recognition system»;
  • eight VT-1 rockets ready for launch.

The surveillance radar is capable of detecting targets at a range of approximately 20 km, whilst the tracking radar has a range of over 30 km. The thermal imaging channel can operate at ranges of up to 19 km, depending on conditions and the type of target.

The system can therefore operate not only using radar data, but also utilising passive optical means.

Why does Ukraine need Crotale when it has Patriot?

Ukraine’s air defence system is being built according to the echelon principle.

Different systems cover different ranges and types of threats.

Patriot and SAMP/T — long-range systems and countermeasures against the most challenging targets, including ballistic threats.

NASAMS and IRIS-T — the intermediate tier of air defence.

Crotale NG — close protection of key facilities.

Mistral, Gepard, mobile fire support units and interceptor drones — an even closer echelon.

This is precisely the line of reasoning that was previously put forward in the French Parliament: the Mistral has a very short range, Crotale closes the intermediate close-range level, whilst SAMP/T operates over a much greater range.

This means that an expensive Patriot missile does not have to be used on every low-flying target.

How many Crotale vehicles did France supply to Ukraine?

The French Ministry of Defence officially states that the following was transferred to Ukraine two Crotale NG systems. The number of VT-1 missiles supplied has not been disclosed.

Ukraine received its first systems back in 2022. They subsequently remained in service with the Ukrainian air defence forces.

In 2026, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence confirmed that Kyiv is interested in further deliveries of Crotale systems and missiles for them alongside the SAMP/T and Mistral.

At the same time, for security reasons, the exact number of Crotale systems currently in Ukraine is not being disclosed publicly.

Where is Crotale most useful to Ukraine?

The complex’s greatest value lies precisely in its role as site-based air defence.

It can be used to cover:

  • power stations and substations;
  • airfields;
  • military bases;
  • warehouses and logistics centres;
  • command posts;
  • large industrial enterprises;
  • other critical infrastructure facilities.

The Crotale’s short range is both a limitation and an advantage: the system is not designed to protect an entire area, but rather to the rapid destruction of a target that has already approached a specific object.

In the face of Russia’s combined attacks, the additional Crotale systems enable Ukraine to strengthen its close-range air defence and reserve the scarce Patriot missiles for those threats against which short-range systems are already ineffective.
