- The Apple Event will begin today at 20:00 Kyiv time.
A video of the first foldable iPhone has sparked controversy
We are talking about A 19-second video clip, which began circulating on social media just before Apple’s presentation.
The video shows a device with two operating modes: when folded, it resembles a standard smartphone, whilst when unfolded, the internal screen is roughly the size of a tablet. However, there is currently no confirmation that the device shown in the footage is indeed a production model from Apple. NDTV notes that a debate has arisen surrounding the video as to whether this is a genuine leak or a video generated or edited using AI.
Concept videos of a foldable iPhone had already appeared online, some of which looked almost like official Apple promotional material. AppleInsider, in particular, reported on one such professionally produced concept as early as the end of August.
Therefore, until the official presentation, the footage should be regarded precisely as unconfirmed leak.
What can we expect from the first foldable iPhone?
At the same time, the very fact that a foldable iPhone is in the pipeline is now hardly in doubt amongst specialist publications.
Reuters reports that the first foldable iPhone will be one of the key new features of the presentation on 9 September. A premium clamshell-style device is expected, with an emphasis on a slim body, a sturdy hinge and a barely noticeable crease on the inner display.
According to preliminary reports, the smartphone may feature:
- external display close by 5.5 inches;
- the inner screen is approximately 7.8 inches;
- book design;
- Apple’s new processor;
- support for multi-window mode;
- enhanced functionality for working with a large display.
MacRumors also points to possible 12 GB of RAM, Touch ID instead of Face ID, and a titanium and aluminium body. These are unofficial specifications for the time being.
The smartphone may be called the iPhone Duo
Another recent detail concerns the name.
Over the past few months, the device has been referred to in leaks as iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. However, on the eve of the presentation, reports emerged that Apple might use the name iPhone Duo. It is the iPhone Duo that could become the official name of the first foldable iPhone.
In addition, a page reportedly appeared briefly on the website of the accessories manufacturer CASETiFY iPhone Duo Case, which has further fuelled the rumours surrounding this name. Apple will only announce the final name during the presentation.
Price — from $2000 to $3000
The foldable iPhone is almost certain to become Apple’s most expensive smartphone.
According to the latest reports from The Verge and MacRumors, the basic version could cost around $2000 with 256 GB of memory.
The top-of-the-range model with 2 TB of storage could cost around $3000. If this information is confirmed, the new model will compete in the highest price segment against premium foldable smartphones from Samsung and Huawei.
Apple may not start sales until October
Even if the smartphone is unveiled today, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to buy it straight away.
According to MacRumors, The iPhone Duo may not go on sale until October at the earliest. This may be due to the complexity of manufacturing flexible displays and limited initial production volumes.
It is expected that Apple will initially offer only a few colours, including white and dark blue.
What else will Apple unveil today?
The foldable iPhone won’t be the only new product.
Reuters, The Verge and other sources are expecting the launch:
- iPhone 18 Pro;
- iPhone 18 Pro Max;
- Apple Watch Series 12;
- Apple Watch Ultra 4;
- possible new AirPods;
- new features of Siri and Apple Intelligence.
According to sources, Apple may postpone the launch of the standard iPhone 18 until 2027.
The presentation will begin at 8.00 pm Kyiv time
Apple has officially confirmed that the event Surprise and shine will begin on 9 September at 10:00 Pacific Time. For Ukraine, this means 8.00 pm Kyiv time.
The livestream will be available on Apple.com, Apple TV and YouTube. It will only become clear during the event to what extent the video currently circulating online matches the actual design of the first foldable iPhone.
