Russians approach Gulyaypol by 4 km and try to surround it
Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports a significant advance of Russian forces towards Huliaipol in the Zaporizhzhia sector. According to analysts, the occupation units have come to a distance of about 4 km to the east and 8 km from the north-east, The company is trying to create the preconditions for an operational encirclement of the city.
At the same time, Russia is stepping up its offensive along the eastern flank and trying to break through the Ukrainian defences to expand its footholds for further offensive.
Details of the situation at the front
ISW notes that Russian troops are advancing towards Huliaipol and a strategically important road T-0401 Pokrovske-Gulyaypole, which is one of the main logistical arteries for Ukrainian forces in the region.
Control of this road could make it difficult to supply ammunition, rotate personnel and evacuate the wounded.
Separate Russian units are attempting to occupy several heights near the city to increase pressure and create a threat of semi-flooding.
Context.
Huliaypole remains one of the most important fortified points in the south, and its holding forms a line of defence that is holding back Russia's deeper advance into the western part of Zaporizhzhia region.
The situation in the region is complicated by simultaneous Russian attacks near Orikhiv and Vremivka, forcing Ukrainian troops to manoeuvre their reserves.
