Russia destroys one of the last generation units in Chernihiv region
Russia has destroyed one of the last working power generation plants in Chernihiv region, effectively plunging the region into darkness. This was reported by The Guardian, noting that local residents now spend up to fourteen hours a day without electricity - they spend their days and evenings in «invincibility points» where they can charge their phones, keep warm and feel less vulnerable to the cold for a moment.
The most difficult situation is in Chernihiv and neighbouring regions of Sumy and Kharkiv. Elevators in high-rise buildings are not working, and water only rises to the first floors; in Chernihiv Hospital No. 2, doctors are forced to cancel planned operations because they can no longer provide stable power supply.
Power engineers say they tried to protect the substation as best they could: they built concrete and sand walls around the transformers. However, they did not have time to cover the facility with a roof, as they lacked both time and money. In three days, Russian Shaheds broke through the defences, destroyed key transformers and took the lives of two workers who had stayed at the site until the last moment.
Context.
This strike is yet another episode in Russia's systemic campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure - a campaign that is driving the country deeper into winter darkness and testing the people's strength to the breaking point.
