Congressman Thomas Massie initiated a bill to end the US participation in the North Atlantic Alliance.

Bill on withdrawal from NATO registered in US Congress

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie announced the introduction of a bill that would see the United States withdraw from the North Atlantic Alliance. According to him, the United States should «stop funding the defence of other countries» and direct resources to its own security.

«America should withdraw from the Alliance and use this money to defend the country,» Massie said, commenting on his initiative.

Reasons cited by the author of the document

The congressman claims that:

  • Washington «bears a disproportionate financial burden» in NATO;

  • European allies «depend on the American army»;

  • the US domestic challenges «require a reorientation of the budget».

The document has already provoked a sharp reaction in Washington and among its allies, as a US withdrawal would effectively mean the structural collapse of NATO.

What will happen next?

In order for the US to withdraw from the Alliance, the bill must pass the House of Representatives and the Senate and be signed by the president. Given the position of the White House and a large part of Congress, experts estimate the chances of the document being passed as «minimal».
