Georgia joins the mechanism for distributing reparations from Russian assets to Ukraine

Georgia signed an international agreement to establish a mechanism that will distribute reparations received from Russian funds, between Ukrainian citizens and Ukrainian companies, affected by Russian aggression. This was reported by the Ukrainian Pravda.

Tbilisi's unexpected move

Despite the complex and tense relations between Kyiv and Tbilisi, Georgia has become the only state in the region, which signed the document. This decision was unexpected against the backdrop of a restrained or passive position of other countries.

Participation of the Foreign Minister

To the diplomatic conference in The Hague, dedicated to the signing of the convention, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili arrived in person. This stood out markedly against the majority of participating States, which were represented mainly by ambassadors.

During the event Bochorishvili said. a public speech in support of the Ukrainian people, without mentioning the existing political differences between Kyiv and Tbilisi.

Position of other countries in the region

According to the publication, Azerbaijan and Armenia generally ignored the meeting in The Hague. Turkey sent only an embassy official to observe the event, but refused to sign any documents.

Context.

The reparations distribution mechanism is seen as one of the key international instruments compensation for damages caused by Russian aggression, and further use frozen assets of the russian federation in favour of Ukraine.
