A missile with a range of 15,000 km could reach the US. Abdolnabi Musavifard, the leader of Friday prayers in Ahvaz, spoke of a possible increase in the range of Iranian missiles. He made the statement on 7 August during a sermon. According to the cleric, Iran is allegedly preparing to develop weapons with a range of up to 15,000 kilometres. He linked this to the possibility of striking deep into the territory of the United States. Musavifard’s statement has been reported by Iran International and the Times of India. However, Musavifard is not a representative of the Iranian Ministry of Defence or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Therefore, his remarks cannot be regarded as an official announcement of a new missile programme. The Iranian military has not confirmed the development As of 11 August, Iranian state and military bodies had not reported the creation of a missile with the claimed range. There is also no information regarding its name, design, engine type, warhead or any tests carried out. Iran’s known ballistic missiles have a significantly shorter range. The claimed range of the «Khorramshahr» family of systems is around 2,000 kilometres. This is sufficient to strike targets in the Middle East and parts of Europe, but not on US territory. Consequently, a missile with a range of 15,000 kilometres would have to be approximately seven times greater than the range of Iran’s best-known combat systems. This would constitute an intercontinental ballistic missile. Ballistic missiles with a range exceeding 5,500 kilometres are classified as intercontinental. Developing a system with a range of 15,000 kilometres would require a significant technological breakthrough from Iran. Such a weapon would require powerful multi-stage engines, a warhead capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures, a precise guidance system, and the technology to traverse the atmosphere at intercontinental speeds. Iran has a space programme and experience in launching multi-stage launch vehicles. Certain technologies from such launch vehicles could be utilised in the development of intercontinental systems; however, this does not confirm the existence of a ready-to-use combat missile. Iran may draw on North Korea’s experience. Iran’s missile programme has historically developed with the involvement of foreign technologies. In particular, the Shahab-3 missile was developed on the basis of the North Korean Nodong. The US Defence Intelligence Agency has previously reported on cooperation between Iran and North Korea in the field of ballistic missiles. North Korea has already tested intercontinental systems capable, in theory, of reaching US territory. Experts therefore do not rule out the possibility that Iran could utilise North Korean expertise for its future missile. At the same time, there is currently no evidence that Tehran has been provided with ready-made technology for a missile with a range of 15,000 kilometres. For the time being, Musavi-Fard’s statement remains a political threat rather than confirmation that Iran possesses an intercontinental missile. To assess its actual capabilities, official data, test results or independent satellite observations are required.
