Ambassadors of the European Union member states approved a €90 billion loan to Ukraine. The 20th package of sanctions against Russia was also agreed. The formal written procedure has already begun.
EU approves loan for Ukraine
On 22 April, EU ambassadors agreed to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan. This decision was made at the level of Permanent Representatives of the Member States.
The loan is part of a long-term financial support package for Ukraine. The funding is aimed at stabilising the economy and rebuilding infrastructure.
20th package of sanctions
In addition to financial assistance, the twentieth sanctions package against Russia. Its details have not yet been disclosed.
The sanctions are the EU's response to Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine. The new package includes restrictions on individuals and legal entities.
Formal approval procedure
Once agreed by the ambassadors, a written procedure for approving decisions was launched. It is standard for such decisions in the EU.
The procedure is expected to be completed in the afternoon of 23 April. The decisions will then come into force.
Ukraine's response
The Ukrainian authorities welcomed the decision of the EU ambassadors. The authorities noted that the financial support will help the country during the difficult period of war.
