Trump accused the Democrats of threatening officials and donors

According to the US President, the Democrats are threatening the US Attorney General Todd Blanche and other members of the administration with impeachment and various forms of punishment. Trump He maintains that there are no legal grounds for such measures, as the officials he is defending have not committed any offences.

Separately, the president claimed that political opponents were allegedly threatening to imprison people who provide financial support to the Republican Party.

Trump described this as the use of state power and the legal system to persecute political opponents. He also claims that Democratic politicians have sent threatening letters to people whom the President considers innocent.

«This is extortion of the highest order, and they must be held to account,» said Trump.

At the end of his post, the president stated that he was instructing the Ministry of Justice to immediately investigate any possible unlawful actions by the Democrats. However, he did not disclose any evidence of threats of imprisonment solely on the basis of political beliefs.

Democrats are preparing an inquiry following their election victory

Trump’s statement came a few days after by-elections 3 November, following the results of which the Democratic Party gained control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The new Congress will take office in January 2027. The Democrats have already announced their intention to strengthen parliamentary scrutiny of the Trump administration’s activities, in particular by scrutinising officials’ decisions, financial transactions and the use of public funds.

Member of Congress Robert García, who may chair the House of Representatives’ Oversight Committee, publicly advised members of the administration after the election to prepare for legal scrutiny.

Lawmakers have also submitted requests for documents relating to donations made by technology companies towards the construction of the new White House ballroom.

Such enquiries and parliamentary investigations fall within the remit of Congress. In themselves, they do not constitute evidence of a criminal offence.

Senator Slotkin has rejected the President’s allegations

In his post, Trump paid particular attention to the Senator from Michigan Elissi Slotkin. He accused her of intending to persecute young people who hold republican views.

The criticism stemmed from Slotkin’s speech at the University of Chicago in October. At the time, the senator spoke of the need to investigate possible misconduct by those involved in implementing the Trump administration’s policies.

According to her, the potential liability for unlawful actions should encourage future civil servants to take a more careful approach to the decisions they agree to be involved in implementing.

Slotkin rejected the interpretation that her words constituted threats against people on the basis of their political beliefs. In response to the President’s statement, she emphasised that those who break the law or use taxpayers’ money for personal gain must be held accountable.

The Ministry of Justice has not yet confirmed that new proceedings have been initiated

Reuters notes that the US Department of Justice has not provided an immediate response to an enquiry regarding the presidential directive. Therefore, Trump’s public statement does not yet constitute confirmed evidence that criminal proceedings have been opened against specific members of the Democratic Party.

The agency had previously conducted an investigation into Slotkin and other lawmakers who had called on military personnel not to carry out unlawful orders. At that time, the grand jury refused to support the bringing of charges.

The current standoff is unfolding on the eve of a change in the parliamentary majority in Washington. The Democrats are preparing to investigate the activities of the presidential administration, whilst Trump is demanding that the legality of his political opponents’ statements and actions be scrutinised.
