What Trump said about his sisters
During his speech, the US President decided to compare himself to a female Member of Congress Ilkhan Omar, whom he accuses of possibly being married to her own brother.
Trump recalled how he himself had allegedly been asked in the past about marrying his sister.
«Can you believe it? Someone once asked me if I’d married my sister. Do you know what I said? No. I swear, I didn’t marry my sister,» said the president.
He then spoke of his two sisters, one of whom died in 2023.
«I had two wonderful sisters; now there’s just one left — Elizabeth. She’s lovely. But I never proposed to either of them,» said Trump.
The American president also added that, despite the sisters’ physical attractiveness, he had never felt any romantic attraction towards them.
He made these remarks during a speech to Republican Party supporters on the eve of the US mid-term congressional elections.
Why did Trump start talking about marrying his sister?
The reason for this unusual digression was the long-standing allegations against Ilhan Omar — a Democratic Party representative from Minnesota who was born in Somalia.
For many years, claims have been circulating in conservative political circles in the US that Omar married her brother Ahmed Nur Said Elmi to obtain immigration benefits.
The Member of Congress has repeatedly rejected these allegations, calling them unfounded. There is no public evidence to suggest that her ex-husband is her brother.
On 21 October, during an interview with a journalist Chris Hayes The politician was asked whether she had any family ties with her ex-husband.
Omar replied: «As far as I know, no.».
Trump used this phrasing to criticise the MP, stating that such a question requires a clear-cut answer. It was after this that he gave the example of his sisters.
