During a meeting in Luxembourg, EU foreign ministers rejected a proposal to suspend the Association Agreement with Israel. The proposal was put forward by Ireland and Spain amid concerns over Israel's actions in Gaza.
Most member states did not support the idea of isolating Israel, stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts. At the same time, some states called for a review of cooperation if the situation deteriorates.
Positions of member states
Ireland and Spain insisted on the need for a tougher EU response because of the humanitarian the situation in Gaza. However, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe opposed the suspension of the association.
Diplomats said that there is currently no consensus on the application of sanctions or other restrictions against Israel. Discussions on this issue are ongoing.
Israel's reaction and further steps
The Israeli government has not yet commented on the EU's decision. EU officials stressed that they remain open to further dialogue with the Israeli side.
It is expected that the issue of cooperation with Israel will be considered again at the next meetings of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
