Zelenskyy is not on Trump’s schedule for the UN General Assembly

There is currently no meeting with Zelenskyy on the US President’s schedule, but the two sides are continuing to work on arranging one.

As of 19 September, a bilateral meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly has not been confirmed. The President of Ukraine is not included in the list of meetings that the US side has shared with journalists. However, this does not mean that the meeting has been definitively ruled out of the schedule — Kyiv and Washington are continuing to work on organising it.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump has not yet been confirmed

According to «Suspilne», two Ukrainian officials have confirmed that: As of 19 September, no separate bilateral meeting between the Presidents of Ukraine and the US has been agreed.

In early September Zelensky said that he expected to meet Trump in the 20s of the month. Among the topics Kyiv would like to raise during the talks, the President of Ukraine mentioned the so-called «winter package», in particular strengthening capabilities to counter ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated this week that the parties are working on arranging a meeting between the two presidents.

So the talks have not been cancelled. They have simply not yet included in the confirmed timetable.

Trump will only be in New York for about a day

Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations Mike Woltz told journalists that Trump would arrive in New York in the afternoon 21 September. This evening, he will take part in political events at Trump Tower.

The main event is on 22 September. Trump will address the UN General Assembly. According to Volz, in his speech the US President plans to discuss the international agreements his administration is working on, Iran, the situation in the Western Hemisphere and the plan for Gaza.

The speech will be followed by a series of talks. The schedule already includes meetings with the Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, and the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham. Meetings are also planned with the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the acting President of Venezuela. Delcy Rodriguez. Trump is due to return to Washington on the evening of 22 September.

Zelenskyy is not currently on this list.

The UN General Assembly will take place against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine

The high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly will take place in New York 22–29 September, whilst the general debates will take place on 22–26 and 28 September.

The Ukraine issue will once again be one of the central topics. Reuters notes that Russia’s war against Ukraine is on the list of key international issues at this year’s General Assembly. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected to address the assembly. However, the diplomatic schedule surrounding the UN is particularly packed this year. Almost immediately after Trump’s return from New York, he will arrive in the US Xi Jinping.

Xi Jinping is due to visit the US on 23 September

The Chinese leader’s state visit is scheduled for 23–25 September. Main Talks between Trump and Xi are due to take place in Washington on 24 September.

According to Reuters, Trump plans to meet Xi Jinping in person upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews — an unusual protocol move for an American president. This will be followed by an official ceremony at the White House, talks and a state dinner.

The agenda for the US and China includes trade, rare-earth metals, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and international security.

For Kyiv, however, the key issue in the coming days remains a different one: whether a meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump will feature in the US President’s final schedule before the start of the UN General Assembly.
