Apple Music has unveiled an updated version of its wordmark, which users noticed following the opening of the Apple Music Hall in London. The new design is being used in materials related to the venue, although Apple has not stated that it will replace the previous logo in the company’s apps, products and all its services.
Briefly about the main points
- The Apple Music logo has become wider and looks more substantial.
- The previous significant update to the word mark took place in 2019.
- A new version appeared in the promotional material for the launch of Apple Music Hall.
- Apple has not confirmed a global rebranding or a change to its logo.
- The London venue combines concerts, studio recordings and global broadcasts.
What has changed in the Apple Music logo?
The main change concerns the typeface and the word «Music». The letters in the new version appear thicker and wider, giving the logo a more distinctive and substantial appearance.
The last significant update to the text took place in 2019: Apple It retained the capital letter M, whilst the rest of the letters in the word ‘Music’ were made lowercase. As a result, users perceived the current design as the first significant change to the branding in around seven years.
Apple Music Hall combines concerts, studios and live broadcasts
Apple has announced the opening of the Apple Music Hall at Battersea Power Station on 21 September. The venue seats 600 people and features a 48-speaker system for spatial audio, two professional recording and mixing studios, and a control room for broadcasts.
The stage, which is approximately 11.6 metres wide, can be configured for a front-facing layout or a «circular» format. The venue also has the infrastructure to accommodate at least 16 cameras, enabling multi-camera recordings of performances to be broadcast to a global audience.
Together with Hall, the company has opened the Apple Music Radio studios in London. These will host local broadcasts and presenters for the service, whilst Apple Music Radio stations are available free of charge around the clock worldwide.
The status of the new design has not yet been determined
In its press release about Apple Music Hall, the company did not describe the new design as the definitive Apple Music logo, nor did it publish any guidelines on its use or a timetable for updating the services. There has also been no separate announcement regarding a change to the Apple Music icon.
At present, the new logo has been spotted in materials relating to the London venue, whilst the previous version is still being used in other parts of the Apple ecosystem. It is more accurate to regard it as an updated version of the brand identity, linked to the launch of Hall.
Apple Music has a catalogue of over 100 million tracks and is available in more than 167 countries and regions. The appearance of new text in the app, on the service’s web pages or in other marketing materials would provide clearer grounds for suggesting a complete redesign.
