OpenAI cited the terms of the contract following the change of ownership at Cursor
According to OpenAI, the agreement with Cursor provides for a limited period during which the contract may be terminated following a change in control of the company. It is precisely this clause that the company is relying on in proposing to cease supplying models in November.
OpenAI also stated that X, formerly known as Twitter and now part of SpaceX, breached the terms of its contract with the company following Musk’s acquisition of the platform. OpenAI noted that major partners such as SpaceX typically require individual agreements governing compliance with the service’s rules and the security of large-scale integration.
Musk reacted sharply, whilst Anthropic pledged its support for Claude
On Saturday, Musk responded to OpenAI’s statement with a post on X, saying he «didn’t care». He also repeated his accusations against OpenAI’s CEO Sema Altman and the company’s president Greg Brockman, describing them as unreliable.
A few hours after OpenAI’s announcement, Anthropic stated that it would increase the computational support for Claude models on Cursor. Anthropic already has a partnership with SpaceX: in May, the company announced access to the Colossus 1 data centre’s capacity to expand the limits of Claude Code and the Claude API.
The decision was taken against the backdrop of a long-standing dispute between Musk and Altman
The conflict between Musk and Altman has been going on for years and this year has culminated in a court case over Musk’s $150 billion claim against OpenAI. Musk claimed that the company had strayed from its original non-commercial mission for the sake of enriching its leadership, whilst OpenAI stated that he was seeking to gain control of the company.
A federal jury had previously ruled that the claim had been filed out of time. Musk argued that this ruling did not constitute an assessment of the merits of the allegations. Co-founder of Cursor Michael Trueell, who currently works as a manager at SpaceX, has stated that the company is in talks with the OpenAI team to resolve the matter.
