Hot weather is set to continue in Kyiv and the Kyiv region over the coming week. At the start of the week, daytime temperatures will rise to 30–35°, with a more significant easing of the heat expected after 7 August. According to the forecast by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, temperatures of 30–34° are expected across most of the country on 3–5 August. In some regions, temperatures will reach 35–38°.
Weather in Kyiv and the surrounding region on 3 August
No significant rainfall is forecast for Kyiv and the surrounding region on Monday night, 3 August. During the day, there may be brief showers and thunderstorms in places.
The wind will be variable in direction, with speeds of 3–8 metres per second. Night-time temperatures in the Kyiv region will be 15–20°, rising to 30–34° during the day.
Temperatures in the capital are forecast to be 18–20° at night and 32–34° during the day. Even any localised rainfall is unlikely to bring a prolonged cold spell, as thunderclouds will form against a backdrop of the air warming up significantly.
The heatwave is set to intensify by the middle of the week
On Tuesday and Wednesday, 4–5 August, dry and hot weather is expected in Kyiv. Overnight, temperatures will range between 20 and 22°, whilst during the day they may reach 35°.
On Thursday, 6 August, the heatwave in Ukraine is set to intensify. According to the advisory forecast, daytime temperatures in various regions may reach 35–39°. Localised, short-lived showers and thunderstorms are possible, but they will be patchy and will not lead to a rapid drop in temperature.
Meteorologists attribute the occurrence of localised thunderstorms to the intense heating of the Earth’s surface and rising currents of warm air. As a result, the weather may vary even in neighbouring areas: there may be a brief downpour in one place, whilst a few kilometres away there will be no rainfall.
When will it get cooler in the capital?
Conditions are expected to bring some relief from the heat after 7 August. Between 7 and 10 August, forecasters predict isolated short-lived showers and thunderstorms, and temperatures in most regions may drop by 3–9°. Consequently, a more noticeable relief in Kyiv and the surrounding region is possible from 8 August onwards.
During the the height of the heatwave Residents of the capital and the region should avoid spending long periods in direct sunlight during the day, drink plenty of water and not leave children or pets in parked cars. The high temperatures also increase the risk of fires in natural ecosystems.
